BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE
Letnica is a unique village with a 700-year history of existence. It was once inhabited by a majority of Croatian families. Together with the villages of Vernakolla and Shashare, until 1999 counted up to 880 Croatian houses.
During the rule of former Yugoslavian system, the village of Letnica was dominant in terms of tourism and one of the most frequented places for merchandisers of that time in the municipality of Viti. Letnica is especially famous for the Church “The Blessed Lady” which dates back to 1866. This church along with the village, holds a story of its own regarding Mother Teresa, who is said to have found her calling to serve God when she was 17 years old and visited there with her family in 1928.
Since then, every year on the 14th and 15 of August, the village hosts many Christian Catholics from all over the world and pilgrims set their tents near the church under lit candles across the village. Along with the church, Letnica is also known for its beautiful landscapes and other heritage sites and buildings such as Kulla of Ivan, Kulla of Josip, the house of Nikolle Mita and the Mill of Frok Dokiq.
