CHwB holds first Heritage Atelier with children in Gjirokastra

EKaKushEKa_header_800x200

On Monday, CHwB organized the first Heritage Atelier for young children, in collaboration with the Soros Public Kindergarten in Gjirokastra. In total, 22 children and 3 teachers from the kindergarten attended this event, which aims to bring the children closer to heritage in a practical, entertaining and instructive format.

To start this atelier, the children were brought to visit the Hammam in Gjirokastra, at a place known locally as the “Seven Fountains”. For children aged 5 to 6, it was the first time that they encountered such a stone building with such an unusual “ice cream” shape. The children, the teachers and the heritage professionals from CHwB engaged in a very interesting conversation about the Hamam and its meaning over the centuries, about water and its value for human kind, as well as about Gjirokastra and its particular status as a Museum City.

Heritage Atelier in Gjirokastra

The second activity was held within the kindergarten, when children started to work with the Hammam booklet provided by ChwB. This booklet was produced by ChwB as a part of the “E Ka Kush E Ka” collection, which seeks to include children and adults in a series of books and games through which they discover and rediscover cultural heritage. In the classroom, spirits were high as children, teachers and CHwB members recalled together the most important lessons from the visit to the Hammam and explored the content of the booklet. A coloring competition between the children closed this first Heritage Atelier and the four best young artists got heritage related presents… while all of them obtained from us a promise to return for another activity of this kind.

Check out a preview of the booklet the children used to explore the Gjirokastra Hammam:

Announcing the 2014 Regional Restoration Camps!

Camps2014_Web

This year, CHwB will be hosting a new series of 5 Regional Restoration Camps across the Western Balkans.

The 16th through 20th Regional Restoration Camps will provide participants with engaging lectures and hands-on experience with restoration and conservation, using traditional materials and techniques, as well as with the interpretation and management of cultural heritage sites.

During each 2-week camp, participants will follow a rigorous but very fulfilling schedule, which combines theory – through lectures and presentations – with exercises and physical work on historic monuments and objects in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo or Serbia. This year, however, each Camp will feature a unique set of guiding themes. Every participant will still receive a broad core of knowledge about conservation, restoration, interpretation and heritage management. Now these will be enhanced by a particular theme to be explored at each location.

Be sure to pay close attention to the dates, themes and application deadline for each of the 2014 Camps:

Gjirokastra, Albania: 26 April – 10 May
Themes: Building conservation / heritage management / interpretation

Each intervention will be directly helping local residents, either with the repair and conservation of their valuable houses or with new means of understanding, interpreting and revitalizing them.

While they will be conducted separately, these restoration camps form part of a region-wide push to encourage people to understand the value and learn how to care for their local heritage. The main objective is to use cultural heritage as a platform for professionals, both men and women, to meet and create conditions for reconciliation as a prerequisite for peace and democracy with respect to human rights, as well as to stimulate local economic growth through the development of cultural heritage.

Students and young professionals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia, are particularly encouraged to apply. For participants coming from these countries, CHwB will cover the following costs of the Camp: tuition, on-site accommodation with breakfast, Camp excursions and materials for camp participation, including tools, papers, etc. Participants will be responsible for paying for their own meals, as well as travel to the location of the Camp. CHwB will not cover those costs.

Applications from other countries are welcome, though they will be required to pay a fee to cover the cost of their participation at the Camp. This fee will be 750 euros, which includes the tuition, on-site accommodation with breakfast, camp materials and planned excursions. Participants will be responsible for paying for their own meals, as well as travel to the location of the Camp. Those costs are not included in the participation fee.

*Note: CHwB will cover meal costs only for participants of the 17th Camp in Rogljevo, Serbia, due to the lack of dining options in the village where the Camp is located.

IMG_3137web_new

Heritage Without Borders (HWB), in partnership with Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) will be offering a textile conservation training course in Gjirokastra, Albania, from 7-16 April 2014, funded by the Clothworkers’ Foundation.

HWB will run a 10-day textile conservation training course for regional museum professionals in Gjirokastra, Albania. The course will help local heritage professionals to conserve and interpret museum collections of unique textiles currently housed in the Ethnographic Museum in the historic city of Gjirokastra. Applications for limited places are currently being accepted from heritage professionals who can demonstrate how the course will benefit them and their institution.

IMG_2765webGjirokastra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southern Albania; an ancient populated area, now a historic Ottoman influenced town built around a 13th century castle. Its 43,000 residents include Albanian, Greek, Vlach and Roma communities. The area has a rich textile history, with much of the production of costume and textiles traditionally undertaken by women. However, in recent decades many of these traditional skills have been dying out.

HWB will cover all participation costs of participants (materials and excursions for the conservation school, accommodation, a meal per diem) except for their travel to/from Gjirokastra, Albania.

Who is this course for?

This course is for museum professionals from Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro who need to look after historic textile collections. Curatorial and conservation staff are eligible to apply.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Awareness of preventive and remedial conservation with respect to textile conservation in modern museums
  • Ability to safely assess textile needs and produce a condition report
  • Ability to handle, package and transport objects with confidence
  • Ability to plan storage for collections
  • Awareness of environmental needs for textiles and ability to think critically about various methods of environmental controls
  • Ability to think critically about public engagement and interpretation of textile collections.

Course Format

The course will be taught through lectures, practical training using the museum’s collections, visits and group discussions. Participants will learn how to tackle risks that threaten textile collections and have an opportunity to share their own experiences with the group. The working language will be English.

prizrenseminar_web_story

Cultural Heritage without Borders encourages you to apply to attend the regional seminar entitled “Past Stories and Future Memories” to be held between October 28 – 30, 2013 in Prizren, Kosovo.

Stories bring places alive and make them relevant to people in contemporary settings, but many stories get buried or lost. Participants will focus around uncovering and reclaiming stories related to heritage sites – their past use and their future potential – through lectures, presentations and the discussions.

This seminar will be of interest to practitioners and academics engaged in heritage practice, audience development and programming. It will consider both strategic and practical approaches designed to connecting people to their heritage and to those of others, with a particular focus on:

  1. Approaches for working with stories and narratives through interpretation
  2. Role of museums and heritage in human rights
  3. Hidden and buried heritage

The seminar will also explore and discuss several case studies from the region and beyond.

The event is organized as a part of the regional project “The Western Balkans – From Historical Integration to Contemporary Active Participation”. The main objective is to use cultural heritage as a platform for professionals, both men and women, to meet and create conditions for reconciliation as a prerequisite for peace and democracy with respect to human rights, as well as to stimulate local economic growth through cultural heritage being developed into an income-generating activity. It is implemented by the foundation Cultural Heritage without Borders in partnership with Co-Plan (from Albania) and Mozaik Foundation (from Bosnia and Herzegovina). The project is funded by the European Commission under the contract number 2011/277-768.

Before applying , please be aware that English will be the working language during the seminar and that the number of participants is limited to 20. Therefore we strongly recommend that you register by October 14. Please send your requests and/or enquiries to the following addresses:
